What is Spiritual Direction?

Individual Spiritual Direction

As you set out to explore more deeply your spirituality, or spiritual matters in general, it is often helpful to journey with a companion who will be with you as a sacred listener to offer some reflection of your thoughts, and help you dive deeper into your own questioning and understanding.  When you engage in Spiritual Direction, you will find a sacred, supportive, and safe space to explore. An environment is fostered to welcome openness and vulnerability, and most importantly, trust.

Organizational Spiritual Direction

Non-profit boards and health care leadership groups are examples of organizations that may be working through transitions or discernment periods and seek the assistance of a Spiritual Director. The group entity is the client, where the spiritual health of the group is most important. A spiritual director could lead the group in a discernment process or observe and offer help as needed as the group follows its own process for decision-making.

Group Spiritual Direction

Practicing Spiritual Direction in community can be a very rich and rewarding experience. In Group Spiritual Direction, you will experience community and connection with others as you discuss matters of the spiritual realm with deep intention. Sharing honestly, listening to others’ sacred stories, and honoring journeys that may be quite different from your own are expected. If you have a small group (3-6 persons), call me to make arrangements and set up guidelines for what can be a deeply moving Spiritual Direction experience.

“I really appreciate that Melissa is not at all prescriptive about what defines a “right” relationship with the Divine.  With my early beginnings in the (…)Church, followed by a zealous evangelical college period, I had always been instructed about the “right” ways to follow God.   This only resulted in an approach to my relationship with God that was based on a performative check-list.

Through the year, Melissa has listened and reflected back to me the ways that she sees me relating to the Divine, and she has affirmed it.”
